The Journey of Nina Baksmaty and the Rise of Koshie O

Nina Baksmaty was at a crossroads in the hectic city of New York in the booming year of 2011. She was lying spread out on her bed, thinking deeply. She was nine weeks pregnant, caught up in a business crisis, and about to give up on her fashion brand. She had no idea how the phone call she was about to receive would change her life and career in fashion.

Baksmaty’s journey started with a biology degree from Westminster College in Missouri; her decision was motivated by her ambition to succeed in the sciences. But after receiving the degree, the need for creativity overcame her and she began to  loose interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Her brother and she had a heartfelt talk that served as a catalyst for a risky decision that would change her course and introduce her to the world of fashion.

Baksmaty’s love of fashion was innate, spanning from her early years spent cutting and sketching patterns in her mother’s clothing shop to her college years when she became her friends’ go-to fashion advisor. Return trips from Ghana, where she made clothing out of colorful wax prints, showed signs of a developing business sense. Equipped with fervor and guidance from her mother, she established Koshie O in 2010, oblivious to the challenges that lay ahead in the cutthroat realm of New York’s fashion industry.

Koshie O faced many difficulties during its early stages. Deals crumbled, supplies dissapointed, and there was a big void in the brand’s identity. Though she was resilient, Baksmaty couldn’t help but regret leaving a secure scientific career to pursue the uncertain world of fashion.

Amidst uncertainty, a pivotal moment arrived in the form of a phone call from Franca Sozanni, the esteemed Italian head of Vogue. This unexpected mentorship opened doors to valuable insights and industry contacts, including luminaries like Roberto Cavalli. Baksmaty’s doubts were replaced with confidence, and Koshie O’s potential for scalability became evident.

Today, Koshie O stands as a testament to Baksmaty’s perseverance and creative vision. The brand seamlessly blends African aesthetics with contemporary designs, offering a refreshing take on everyday fashion wear. Luxury fabrics, coupled with Africa-inspired motifs, define Koshie O’s signature style, creating wearable pieces suited for the modern individual on the go. The brand’s diverse offerings include dresses, bags, skirts, accessories, sandals, blazers, and shirts for men.

Beyond the realm of fashion, Koshie O has achieved success by working with well-known celebrities like Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams and America’s Next Top Model’s Eva Marcille. Baksmaty’s rise from a biology degree to the top of the fashion industry is a testament to the strength of perseverance, guidance, and a deep-seated love of creativity.
