Sylvester Mensah’s Appointment Right On Point At The Right Time
In a bold move set to reshape Ghana’s financial landscape, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Sylvester Adinam Mensah as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM).
This appointment signals a strategic shift aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s export sector and strengthening its global trade position.
Mensah, an experienced finance and strategy expert, steps into the role with a mandate to drive Ghana’s transition into an export-led economy.
His leadership is expected to tackle key market inefficiencies while fostering greater trade partnerships between Ghana and international markets.
A statement from GEXIM, released on Friday, January 24, emphasized that Mensah’s appointment aligns with the Bank’s core mission under the Ghana Export-Import Bank Act 2016 (Act 991). His primary objective is to enhance Ghana’s global competitiveness and position the country as a formidable player in international trade.
“With over two decades of expertise in Corporate Strategy, Strategic Management, and Strategy Execution, Mr. Mensah possesses the financial and managerial acumen necessary to steer GEXIM towards greater efficiency and impact,” the statement read.
Beyond his banking and financial expertise, Mensah is an academic, serving as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Nobel International Business School.
His deep knowledge in finance, governance, and strategy makes him well-equipped to drive transformational policies at GEXIM.
A Fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting (FIBC), UK, and a Certified Strategy Professional, Mensah has a proven track record in strategic financial management and innovative economic solutions.
His tenure as Head of Public Sector Banking at the then Intercontinental Bank (Ghana) Ltd saw him spearhead the development of rigorous credit risk assessment frameworks.
His political and administrative experience further bolsters his credentials. As a former Member of Parliament for the La Dadekotopon Constituency and later as Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mensah played a key role in expanding Ghana’s health insurance system, implementing efficiency-driven reforms, and strengthening financial sustainability.
Mensah’s academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ghana Business School and an MBA in Finance from the University of Leicester, UK, supplemented by several international certifications.
With his wealth of experience and a clear vision for Ghana’s export sector, Mensah’s appointment represents a major shake-up in the financial sector—one that could redefine the country’s economic trajectory under President Mahama’s leadership.
